Level 2 — Build Confidence

  1. Start with 5757. Reverse it to get 7575. Add: 57+75=13257 + 75 = 132. Reverse 132132 to get 231231. Add: 132+231=?132 + 231 = ?. Is the result a palindrome?
  2. Take the 4-digit number 30873087. Perform one step of the Kaprekar routine (arrange digits in descending order, subtract ascending order).
  3. A number has digit sum 99. Is it divisible by 99? Why?

  1. Complete this 3x3 magic square where every row, column, and diagonal adds to 1515:

1. Be systematic with Kaprekar. Always arrange digits in descending order first, then ascending. Subtract the smaller from the larger. Repeat. You should reach 6174 within 7 steps for any 4-digit number (where digits are not all the same).

2. Digit sums are powerful shortcuts. The digit sum of a number has the same remainder when divided by 9 as the original number. This is why digit-sum divisibility tests work.

3. For palindrome problems, work from outside in. A 5-digit palindrome like abcbaabcba has only 3 free choices: aa, bb, and cc.

4. Magic squares need a strategy. In a 3x3 magic square with magic sum SS, the centre number is always S/3S / 3. Start there and work outwards.

5. When stuck on a pattern, write more terms. If the pattern is not obvious from 4 terms, write 6 or 7. Look at the differences between consecutive terms.
