Why Data Handling Matters

Every time you check the weather forecast, read a sports scorecard, or see election results on TV, you are looking at data. Data handling teaches you how to collect raw information, organise it neatly, and present it so anyone can understand it at a glance.

In Class 6, you start with the basics: tally marks, frequency tables, pictographs and bar graphs. These are the same tools that scientists, economists and journalists use every day, just in a simpler form.

This Data Handling Class 6 worksheet will help you become confident at reading and drawing data representations through 60 practice questions.

What Does This Worksheet Cover?

Based on the NCERT Class 6 Data Handling chapter:

  • Recording data — tally marks and frequency tables
    - Pictographs — reading and interpreting picture-based data
    - Drawing pictographs — choosing a key and representing data
    - Bar graphs — reading values from bar charts
    - Drawing bar graphs — choosing a scale and plotting bars
    - Interpreting data — answering questions from graphs
    - Mean (average) — finding the arithmetic mean of a data set

Sample Questions

Level 1 — Warm Up

1. The following are the favourite fruits of 20 students: Apple, Mango, Apple, Banana, Mango, Mango, Apple, Banana, Apple, Mango, Banana, Apple, Mango, Apple, Mango, Banana, Mango, Apple, Mango, Banana. Make a frequency table using tally marks.
2. In a pictograph, one symbol represents 5 books. If a student has 3 symbols, how many books does the student have?
3. What does a half-symbol mean in a pictograph?

Level 2 — Build Confidence

4. A bar graph shows that Class 6A scored 85 runs, 6B scored 72, 6C scored 90 and 6D scored 68 in a cricket tournament. Which class scored the most? What is the difference between the highest and lowest scores?
5. Find the mean of: 12, 15, 18, 9, 21
6. In a bar graph, the scale is 1 cm = 10 students. If the bar for "Cricket" is 4.5 cm tall, how many students chose cricket?

Level 3 — Push Yourself

7. The runs scored by a batsman in 6 matches are: 45, 32, 67, 50, 28, 54. Find the mean. If the batsman wants to raise the mean to 50 after a 7th match, how many runs must be scored?
8. Draw a bar graph for: Maths (85 marks), Science (72), English (68), Hindi (80), Social Studies (75). Choose a suitable scale.
9. Two pictographs show the same data but use different keys (one uses 1 symbol = 10, the other uses 1 symbol = 5). Which is more accurate and why?

Common Mistakes in Data Handling

1. Miscounting tally marks. Every fifth mark crosses the previous four (=5\cancel{||||} = 5). Double-check your counts against the original data.

2. Ignoring the key in pictographs. If one symbol = 4 cars, then 3 symbols = 12 cars, not 3. Always multiply by the key value.

3. Wrong scale in bar graphs. If your data ranges from 10 to 90, a scale of 1 cm = 1 is impractical. Choose 1 cm = 10. The scale should make the graph readable.

4. Bars of unequal width. All bars in a bar graph must have the same width. Only the height varies.

5. Forgetting to label axes. Every bar graph needs a title, labelled axes, and a clearly stated scale. Marks are deducted in exams for missing labels.
