Fractions Are Everywhere

Half a roti, a quarter of a pizza, three-fourths of your homework done. Fractions describe parts of everyday life. Yet many students find them tricky because unlike whole numbers, fractions have two parts that work together: the numerator and the denominator.

The good news? Fractions follow clear rules. Once you understand equivalent fractions and how to find common denominators, the rest falls into place. This Fractions Class 6 worksheet gives you 60 questions designed to build that understanding step by step.

What Does This Worksheet Cover?

Based on the NCERT Class 6 Fractions chapter:

  • Types of fractions — proper, improper, mixed, like, unlike, unit fractions
    - Fractions on the number line
    - Equivalent fractions — generating and identifying
    - Simplest form — reducing using HCF
    - Comparing and ordering fractions
    - Addition of like and unlike fractions
    - Subtraction of like and unlike fractions

Sample Questions

Level 1 — Warm Up

1. Classify as proper, improper or mixed: 53\frac{5}{3}, 27\frac{2}{7}, 4124\frac{1}{2}
2. Write three equivalent fractions for 25\frac{2}{5}.
3. Reduce 1824\frac{18}{24} to its simplest form.

Level 2 — Build Confidence

4. Compare 47\frac{4}{7} and 35\frac{3}{5}. Which is greater?
5. Add: 38+58\frac{3}{8} + \frac{5}{8}
6. Convert 3253\frac{2}{5} to an improper fraction.

Level 3 — Push Yourself

7. Subtract: 5629\frac{5}{6} - \frac{2}{9}
8. Ananya ate 25\frac{2}{5} of a cake. Her brother ate 14\frac{1}{4}. What fraction of the cake was eaten in total?
9. Arrange in descending order: 34\frac{3}{4}, 58\frac{5}{8}, 712\frac{7}{12}, 23\frac{2}{3}

Mistakes Students Make with Fractions

1. Adding numerators AND denominators. 13+1427\frac{1}{3} + \frac{1}{4} \neq \frac{2}{7}. You need a common denominator first. The correct answer is 712\frac{7}{12}.

2. Forgetting to simplify. Always check if the numerator and denominator share a common factor. 68\frac{6}{8} should be written as 34\frac{3}{4}.

3. Comparing by numerator alone. 35\frac{3}{5} is not automatically less than 49\frac{4}{9} just because 3<43 < 4. Convert to like fractions first.

4. Wrong mixed-to-improper conversion. For 2372\frac{3}{7}, the improper fraction is 2×7+37=177\frac{2 \times 7 + 3}{7} = \frac{17}{7}, not 237\frac{23}{7}.

5. Skipping the LCM step. When adding unlike fractions, find the LCM of denominators first. Jumping straight to addition will give wrong answers every time.
