Your First Meeting with Negative Numbers

Think about temperature. Delhi in December can drop to 2°C2°C. Shimla can go below zero to 5°C-5°C. That minus sign is not just decoration. It tells you the temperature is below the freezing point.

Integers extend the number line to the left of zero. You already know 0,1,2,3,0, 1, 2, 3, \ldots (whole numbers). Now you add 1,2,3,-1, -2, -3, \ldots to get the full set of integers. This opens up a whole new world of arithmetic.

Many students find integers confusing at first. "How can you subtract a bigger number from a smaller one?" This Integers Class 6 worksheet will clear up that confusion with plenty of practice.

What Does This Worksheet Cover?

Aligned with the NCERT Class 6 Integers chapter:

  • Understanding integers — positive, negative, zero
    - Representing integers on a number line
    - Ordering and comparing integers (e.g., 7<3<0<5-7 < -3 < 0 < 5)
    - Absolute value — distance from zero
    - Addition of integers — same sign and different signs
    - Subtraction of integers — using the rule "add the opposite"
    - Real-life contexts — temperature, altitude, bank balance, floors below ground

Sample Questions

Level 1 — Warm Up

1. Arrange in ascending order: 12,5,3,0,8,8-12, 5, -3, 0, 8, -8
2. Write the integer that is 6 less than 2-2.
3. Mark 4-4, 1-1, 22 and 55 on a number line.

Level 2 — Build Confidence

4. Compute: (15)+(+8)(-15) + (+8)
5. Compute: (6)(11)(-6) - (-11)
6. The temperature at midnight was 3°C-3°C. By noon it rose by 9°C9°C. What is the noon temperature?

Level 3 — Push Yourself

7. Evaluate: (25)+18+(13)+7+(2)(-25) + 18 + (-13) + 7 + (-2)
8. A submarine is at 200-200 metres. It rises 75 metres, then dives 40 metres. What is its new depth?
9. Find two integers whose sum is 8-8 and whose difference is 22.

How to Avoid Common Integer Mistakes

1. Subtracting a negative is adding. 5(3)=5+3=85 - (-3) = 5 + 3 = 8. Think of it as removing a debt — you get richer.

2. Adding two negatives gives a negative. (4)+(7)=11(-4) + (-7) = -11. You are moving further left on the number line.

3. When signs are different, subtract and keep the sign of the larger absolute value. (15)+8(-15) + 8: difference is 77, and 15>815 > 8, so the answer is 7-7.

4. Do not confuse the minus sign with negative. In 838 - 3, the minus means subtraction. In 3-3, it means the number is negative. Context matters.

5. Use the number line for checking. If you are unsure, plot the starting number and count the jumps. Right means adding, left means subtracting.
