Why Knowing Our Numbers Matters

Numbers are everywhere. The population of India, the distance to the Moon, the price of your favourite cricket bat. But can you read a 7-digit number without stumbling? Can you tell which is bigger: 59,73,482 or 60,01,003?

Knowing Our Numbers is the first chapter in Class 6 CBSE Maths for a reason. It builds the foundation you need for every topic that follows. If you get comfortable with large numbers, place values, and estimation now, algebra and data handling become much easier later.

This Knowing Our Numbers Class 6 worksheet gives you structured practice across three difficulty levels. Every question comes with a step-by-step answer so you can check your work immediately.

Tips for Solving Number Problems

1. Use commas correctly. Indian system places commas after hundreds, then every two digits (1,23,45,678). International system places commas every three digits (12,345,678). Getting the commas right helps you read the number.

2. Line up place values when comparing. Write both numbers with the same number of digits (pad with leading zeros if needed). Then compare from the leftmost digit.

3. Estimation is not guessing. Round each number first, then do the operation. The NCERT method rounds to the largest place value of the smaller number.

4. Check predecessor and successor questions carefully. The predecessor of 1,00,000 is 99,999 (the digit count changes). Many students slip here.

5. Roman numerals — remember the rules. You cannot repeat V, L, or D. And you can only subtract I from V and X, X from L and C, C from D and M.
