Mathematics Is the Science of Patterns

Patterns are the heart of mathematics. The times table is a pattern. The way odd numbers add up to make perfect squares is a pattern. Even the spiral of a sunflower follows a mathematical pattern.

In Class 6, this chapter introduces you to recognising and extending patterns in numbers and shapes. This is not just fun. Pattern recognition is the skill that later helps you write algebraic rules, understand sequences, and even crack competitive exam problems.

Level 1 — Warm Up

1. Find the next three terms: 5, 10, 15, 20, __, __, __
2. What type of numbers are: 1, 4, 9, 16, 25?
3. How many matchsticks make 4 squares in a row (each sharing a side with the next)?

Level 2 — Build Confidence

4. The pattern is: 2, 6, 12, 20, 30, ... What is the rule? Find the next two terms.
5. Find the 6th triangular number.
6. Look at the pattern: 1=11 = 1, 1+3=41 + 3 = 4, 1+3+5=91 + 3 + 5 = 9, 1+3+5+7=161 + 3 + 5 + 7 = 16. What is 1+3+5+7+9+111 + 3 + 5 + 7 + 9 + 11?

Level 3 — Push Yourself

7. A pattern of dots forms triangles: Row 1 has 1 dot, Row 2 has 2 dots, Row 3 has 3 dots. If there are 8 rows, how many dots in total? Can you write a formula?
8. Find the pattern and fill in the blank: 1×1=11 \times 1 = 1, 11×11=12111 \times 11 = 121, 111×111=12321111 \times 111 = 12321, 1111×1111=?1111 \times 1111 = ?
9. Meera makes designs with tiles. Design 1 uses 5 tiles, Design 2 uses 8, Design 3 uses 11. How many tiles for Design 20?

How to Crack Pattern Questions

1. Look at the differences. Write the difference between consecutive terms. If the differences are constant (like 3, 3, 3), it is an arithmetic pattern. If the differences themselves form a pattern, go one level deeper.

2. Check for multiplication. Some patterns grow by multiplying: 2, 6, 18, 54 (each term is 3 times the previous). Not every pattern is additive.

3. Relate to known sequences. Triangular numbers: 1,3,6,10,15,1, 3, 6, 10, 15, \ldots (differences increase by 1). Square numbers: 1,4,9,16,25,1, 4, 9, 16, 25, \ldots (differences are odd numbers). Recognising these saves time.

4. For shape patterns, draw the next one. If matchsticks or dots are involved, physically draw or count the pattern. Then look at how the count changes.

**5. Write the rule using nn.** If Design 1 uses 5 tiles, Design 2 uses 8, Design 3 uses 11, the rule is 3n+23n + 2. Check: when n=1n = 1, 3(1)+2=53(1) + 2 = 5. This connects patterns to algebra.
