Symmetry Is All Around You

Look at a butterfly. Fold it down the middle and both halves match. That fold line is a line of symmetry. You will find symmetry in leaves, buildings, rangoli designs, the Taj Mahal, and even the letters of the alphabet.

Symmetry in Class 6 Maths teaches you to identify and draw lines of symmetry, complete symmetrical figures, and understand reflection. It is a visual chapter that builds your spatial reasoning, which is important for geometry in higher classes.

This Symmetry Class 6 worksheet uses 60 questions to help you see and draw symmetry confidently.

What Does This Worksheet Cover?

Based on the NCERT Class 6 Symmetry chapter:

  • Lines of symmetry — identifying the line that divides a figure into two mirror halves
    - Multiple lines of symmetry — some shapes have more than one (a square has 4, a circle has infinite)
    - Symmetry in regular polygons — equilateral triangle (3 lines), square (4), regular pentagon (5), etc.
    - Symmetry in English alphabet letters — A, H, M, O, etc.
    - Reflection symmetry — completing a figure given half and the line of symmetry
    - Symmetry in Indian patterns — rangoli, kolam, mehndi designs

Sample Questions

Level 1 — Warm Up

1. How many lines of symmetry does a rectangle have?
2. Which of these letters have exactly one line of symmetry: A, B, C, D, H, O?
3. Is a scalene triangle symmetrical? Explain.

Level 2 — Build Confidence

4. Draw all lines of symmetry for a regular hexagon. How many are there?
5. Half of a symmetrical figure is shown on the left side of a vertical line. Complete the other half.
6. A shape has exactly 3 lines of symmetry. What shape could it be?

Level 3 — Push Yourself

7. An isosceles triangle has how many lines of symmetry? What about an equilateral triangle? Compare and explain why they differ.
8. Design a rangoli pattern that has exactly 4 lines of symmetry.
9. The number 8, when written digitally, has 2 lines of symmetry. Find all single-digit numbers (digital display style) that have at least one line of symmetry.

Tips for Symmetry Questions

1. Use the fold test. Imagine folding the figure along the line. If both halves overlap perfectly, it is a line of symmetry.

2. A line of symmetry is not just vertical. It can be horizontal (like in the letter B) or diagonal (like in a square). Check all directions.

3. Regular polygons have as many lines of symmetry as they have sides. Equilateral triangle = 3, square = 4, regular pentagon = 5, and so on.

4. Rectangles vs squares. A rectangle has only 2 lines of symmetry (one horizontal, one vertical). A square has 4 (two through midpoints, two through diagonals). Do not assume they are the same.

5. When completing a figure, use grid paper. Count squares from the line of symmetry to each point, then mirror those distances on the other side.
