Why Whole Numbers Are Important
You have been working with whole numbers since primary school. But Class 6 is where you start seeing them differently. Now you learn why always works, what happens when you multiply by zero, and how the number line stretches out to the right forever.
These properties are not random rules to memorise. They are the building blocks of algebra. When you study equations in Class 7, you will use the commutative and distributive properties constantly.
This Whole Numbers Class 6 worksheet helps you practise all these ideas with 60 questions across three levels. Each answer is fully worked out.
What Does This Worksheet Cover?
Based on NCERT Class 6 Chapter 2, the worksheet covers:
- Natural numbers vs whole numbers — why zero makes the difference
- Number line — representing and comparing numbers, finding successors and predecessors
- Properties of addition — closure, commutative, associative, additive identity
- Properties of multiplication — closure, commutative, associative, multiplicative identity, multiplication by zero
- Distributive property —
- Division facts — division is not commutative, division by zero is undefined
- Patterns in whole numbers — triangular numbers, square numbers, number patterns
| Level | Focus | Count |

| Level 2 | Apply properties to simplify, fill in the blanks, patterns | 20 |
| Level 3 | Multi-step reasoning, word problems, pattern discovery | 20 |
Sample Questions
Level 1 — Warm Up
1. Which is the smallest whole number?
2. Find the sum using a suitable rearrangement:
3. Mark the numbers 3, 7, and 11 on a number line and identify which is closest to 10.
Level 2 — Build Confidence
4. Use the distributive property to find . (Hint: write 98 as .)
5. Find the number that satisfies: . Name the property used.
6. Starting from 1, write the first five triangular numbers.
Level 3 — Push Yourself
7. A shopkeeper sold 125 packets on Monday, 198 on Tuesday and 75 on Wednesday. Use properties of addition to find the total quickly.
8. Is the statement true or false? "For whole numbers, for all non-zero values." Justify with an example.
9. Find a pattern: , , , . What type of numbers do you get?

Common Mistakes to Watch Out For
1. Confusing natural numbers and whole numbers. Natural numbers start from 1. Whole numbers start from 0. Zero is a whole number but not a natural number.
2. Forgetting that division by zero is undefined. is not zero. It is undefined. This trips many students in MCQs.
3. Applying commutativity to subtraction or division. and . Only addition and multiplication are commutative for whole numbers.
4. Skipping the distributive property shortcut. Questions like become simple when you write . Many students do long multiplication instead.
5. Ignoring predecessor of 0. Whole numbers do not have a predecessor for 0 (there is no whole number less than 0).
