Level 2 is where children learn the standard algorithm that will serve them through the rest of school. Neat alignment in columns is essential — encourage the use of grid paper.

4. Aman buys 5 kg of rice at Rs 68 per kg and 3 kg of sugar at Rs 45 per kg. What is the total bill?
*Answer: Rice: 68×5=34068 \times 5 = 340. Sugar: 45×3=13545 \times 3 = 135. Total: 340+135=Rs 475340 + 135 = \text{Rs } 475.*

5. Fill in the pattern: 9×1=99 \times 1 = 9, 9×2=189 \times 2 = 18, 9×3=279 \times 3 = 27, ..., 9×9=9 \times 9 = ___. What pattern do you notice in the digits of the products?
*Answer: 9×9=819 \times 9 = 81. Pattern: the tens digit increases by 1 (0, 1, 2, ..., 8) and the ones digit decreases by 1 (9, 8, 7, ..., 1). Also, the digits of each product sum to 9.*

Common Mistakes to Watch For

Multiplication errors in Class 3 are predictable and fixable. Here are the most common ones.

1. Forgetting the carried digit in column multiplication. In 47×647 \times 6: ones give 4242, write 2 carry 4. If the child forgets to add 4 to the tens product, the answer will be wrong. A small written carry mark above the column helps.

2. Confusing the 6, 7, 8 tables. Products like 6×8=486 \times 8 = 48, 7×8=567 \times 8 = 56, and 6×7=426 \times 7 = 42 are the most commonly confused. Extra drilling on these specific facts pays off.

3. Multiplying by 0 incorrectly. Some children think 5×0=55 \times 0 = 5. The rule is simple: anything multiplied by zero is zero. Reinforce this with the repeated addition model: zero groups of five is zero.

4. Misaligning columns. When multiplying 125×4125 \times 4, writing digits in the wrong column leads to answers like 5,0005{,}000 instead of 500500. Grid paper prevents this.

5. Not reading word problems carefully. A problem that says "how many more" requires subtraction after multiplication. Children sometimes give the multiplication result as the final answer without completing the second step.

Tips for Parents — Building Table Fluency at Home

Daily oral practice. Spend five minutes each day going through tables. Mix them up — do not always go in order from ×1\times 1 to ×10\times 10. Random recall is what children need in exams.

The finger trick for the 9 times table. Hold both hands up with fingers spread. To find 9×49 \times 4, fold down the 4th finger from the left. The fingers to the left of the folded finger (3) give the tens digit, and the fingers to the right (6) give the ones digit: 3636.

Flashcard games. Write multiplication questions on one side of index cards and answers on the other. Shuffle and go through the deck. Set aside any cards your child gets wrong and review those at the end.

Connect to real life. "We need 6 eggs for one cake. We are baking 4 cakes. How many eggs?" Everyday multiplication makes the concept tangible.

Reward speed and accuracy. Time your child on 20 table-fact questions. Record their time and try to beat it next week. This gamification keeps motivation high.

Do not skip the hard facts. Children naturally avoid the products they find difficult. Identify the weak spots (often 7×87 \times 8, 6×96 \times 9, 8×88 \times 8) and practise those specifically.
