Why Worksheets Still Matter for Class 7 Maths

If there is one chapter in Class 7 that shows up in everyday life, it is comparing quantities. From the discount on a new pair of shoes to the interest on a piggy bank deposit, children start seeing these maths ideas everywhere. That is precisely why learning them well matters, and why practising them on paper beats only tapping on a screen.

A parent asked me last month why her son could not calculate a simple shop discount even though he scored full marks on his percentages app. My answer was simple: the app gave him the numbers in the right format. In real life, and on exam papers, the numbers come wrapped inside a story. The student must first understand the story, extract the right numbers, and then apply the correct method. Worksheets teach exactly that skill because every question is presented in full paragraph form.

There is also the matter of layout. Percentage and profit loss questions usually have multiple steps. Students who practise on paper learn to write each step neatly and show their working. That matters because exam markers award marks for method, not just the final answer.

Worksheets also avoid the temptation to reach for a calculator. Class 7 exams do not allow calculators, so a student who relies on tap to calculate will struggle. Paper work forces mental maths and written long division, both of which are exam essentials.

And of course, practising on paper gives a break from the screen. For young students already spending hours on devices, paper is kinder to the eyes.

Key Concepts to Revise Before Attempting

Revise these key formulas and ideas before starting.

* Ratio — A comparison of two quantities by division. Written as a:ba : b or ab\dfrac{a}{b}.
* Equivalent ratios — Ratios that represent the same comparison. 2:3=4:6=6:92 : 3 = 4 : 6 = 6 : 9.
* Proportion — Four numbers a,b,c,da, b, c, d are in proportion if a:b=c:da : b = c : d. Written as a:b::c:da : b :: c : d.
* Cross product rule — In a proportion ab=cd\dfrac{a}{b} = \dfrac{c}{d}, we have ad=bcad = bc.
* Percentage — A ratio expressed out of 100. 25%=25100=1425\% = \dfrac{25}{100} = \dfrac{1}{4}.
* Percentage of a quantityx%x\% of N=x100×NN = \dfrac{x}{100} \times N.
* Percentage increaseIncreaseOriginal×100%\dfrac{\text{Increase}}{\text{Original}} \times 100\%.
* Profit — Selling price minus cost price, when SP >> CP. Profit %=ProfitCP×100%\% = \dfrac{\text{Profit}}{\text{CP}} \times 100\%.
* Loss — Cost price minus selling price, when CP >> SP. Loss %=LossCP×100%\% = \dfrac{\text{Loss}}{\text{CP}} \times 100\%.

Quick tip: Always check whether the percentage is calculated on the cost price or the selling price. Mistakes usually come from using the wrong base.

Sample Questions from Each Level

Level 1 — Easy

1. Convert 35\dfrac{3}{5} to a percentage.
Solution: 35×100=60%\dfrac{3}{5} \times 100 = 60\%.

2. Find 20%20\% of 150150.
Solution: 20100×150=30\dfrac{20}{100} \times 150 = 30.

3. Simplify the ratio 12:1812 : 18.
Solution: Divide both by HCF 66. Ratio is 2:32 : 3.

Level 2 — Medium

1. If 55 pens cost Rs. 75, what is the cost of 88 pens?
Solution: Cost of one pen is 755=15\dfrac{75}{5} = 15. Cost of 88 pens is 8×15=1208 \times 15 = 120.

2. A quantity increases from 8080 to 100100. Find the percentage increase.
Solution: Increase is 2020. Percentage increase =2080×100=25%= \dfrac{20}{80} \times 100 = 25\%.

3. A shopkeeper buys a book for Rs. 150 and sells it for Rs. 180. Find his profit percentage.
Solution: Profit =180150=30= 180 - 150 = 30. Profit %=30150×100=20%\% = \dfrac{30}{150} \times 100 = 20\%.

Level 3 — Hard

1. The ratio of boys to girls in a school is 5:45 : 4. If there are 270270 students in total, how many are girls?
Solution: Total parts is 99. Each part is 2709=30\dfrac{270}{9} = 30. Girls =4×30=120= 4 \times 30 = 120.

2. A shop gives a discount of 15%15\% on an item marked Rs. 800. Find the selling price.
Solution: Discount =15100×800=120= \dfrac{15}{100} \times 800 = 120. SP =800120=680= 800 - 120 = 680.

3. The salary of a person increased from Rs. 25,000 to Rs. 30,000. What is the percentage increase?
Solution: Increase =5000= 5000. Percentage =500025000×100=20%= \dfrac{5000}{25000} \times 100 = 20\%.

How to Use This Worksheet Effectively

1. Print — Use A4 paper and a pen.
2. Warm up — Practise five quick percentage conversions mentally, like 25%25\% of 4040.
3. Time yourself — 20 minutes for Level 1, 30 for Level 2, 35 for Level 3.
4. Check answers — Use the answer key.
5. Revise mistakes — For every wrong answer, write the formula and steps used.
6. Try again — Redo wrong questions next day.

Daily plan: 25 minutes per day for two weeks.

Weekly revision: Each Saturday, solve five word problems at random. Word problems are the hardest part of this chapter.

Common Mistakes Students Make in Comparing Quantities

1. Forgetting to convert units — Comparing 11 kg and 500500 g as 1:5001 : 500 instead of 1000:500=2:11000 : 500 = 2 : 1.

2. Using the wrong base for percentage — Calculating profit percent on the selling price instead of the cost price.

3. Multiplying instead of dividing — Unitary method confusion. If 55 pens cost 7575, one pen costs 75÷575 \div 5, not 75×575 \times 5.

4. Decimal errors — Writing 0.250.25 as 25%25\% is fine, but 0.0250.025 is 2.5%2.5\%, not 25%25\%.

5. Not simplifying ratios — Leaving the ratio as 10:1510 : 15 instead of 2:32 : 3 costs method marks.

6. Mixing up increase and decrease — Writing the increase as a decrease or vice versa because of a rushed read of the question.
