Data Handling Is More Fun Than You Think
Data Handling is one of those chapters that doesn't feel like traditional maths. Instead of solving equations, you're reading graphs, making tally marks, and figuring out what the numbers mean. It's closer to detective work than calculation.
But students still lose marks here — usually because they don't practise reading and interpreting graphs enough. This worksheet has 60 questions that cover everything from basic tally charts to multi-step bar graph problems. If you can work through all three levels, you'll be well-prepared for anything the ICSE exam throws at you in this chapter.
What's Inside This Worksheet?
The worksheet follows the ICSE Class 6 syllabus for Data Handling (Chapter 11):
Level 1 (Basics — 20 questions):
- Collecting and organising data
- Tally marks and frequency tables
- Reading pictographs — answering questions from given pictographs
- Reading bar graphs — extracting information
Level 2 (Application — 20 questions):
- Drawing bar graphs from given data
- Choosing the right scale for a bar graph
- Interpreting double bar graphs
- Finding range of a data set
- Calculating mean (average) of small data sets
Level 3 (Challenge — 20 questions):
- Multi-step interpretation questions from bar graphs
- Word problems that require collecting data first, then representing it
- Comparing data across two categories using graphs
- Finding mean, interpreting what the mean tells us
- Choosing the best way to represent given data
Sample Questions
Here are some questions from the worksheet:
Q1 (Level 1): The following data shows the number of books read by 10 students in a month: 3, 5, 2, 7, 4, 3, 6, 5, 2, 4. Make a frequency table using tally marks.
Q2 (Level 1): A pictograph shows that each symbol represents 5 students. If the row for "Cricket" has 7 symbols, how many students chose cricket?
Q3 (Level 2): Draw a bar graph for the following data — Favourite fruits of 50 students: Mango (18), Apple (12), Banana (8), Grapes (7), Orange (5). Use a scale of 1 cm = 2 students.
Q4 (Level 2): Find the mean of: 12, 15, 18, 21, 14
Q5 (Level 3): A bar graph shows monthly rainfall in a city. June: 120 mm, July: 185 mm, August: 210 mm, September: 95 mm. In which month was the rainfall closest to the average rainfall for these four months?
Q6 (Level 3): Ravi scored 72, 85, 64, 91, and 78 in five tests. He has one more test. What score does he need to get an average of 80 across all six tests?

How to Score Full Marks in Data Handling
Data Handling is one of the easier chapters to score full marks in — if you follow these habits:
Read the graph carefully. Before answering any question, look at the title, the axes, and the scale. Many wrong answers come from misreading the scale (thinking 1 square = 5 when it actually equals 10).
When drawing bar graphs, be precise. Use a ruler. Make all bars the same width. Leave equal gaps between bars. Label both axes. Give your graph a title. These presentation details matter in ICSE.
For pictograph questions, check the key. The symbol might represent 2, 5, 10, or any number. Half a symbol means half that value. Always check the key before answering.
Mean = Total of all values divided by number of values. Write this formula every time. Even for simple questions, showing the formula earns you a step mark.
Practise drawing, not just reading. Level 2 asks you to create bar graphs. Many students can read a graph but struggle to draw one neatly. Practise this at home with graph paper.

Data Handling Connects to These Topics
Data Handling might seem standalone, but it connects to other maths skills:
- Fractions — calculating averages often gives fractional answers
- Ratio & Proportion — comparing data categories often involves ratios
- Number System — working with large numbers in data sets needs strong number sense
In Class 7 and 8, Data Handling expands into probability, more complex graphs (histograms, pie charts), and measures like median and mode. Building solid graph-reading and mean-calculation skills now keeps you ahead.
