Fractions — The Chapter That Needs the Most Practice

Ask any Class 6 teacher which chapter causes the most trouble, and the answer is usually fractions. The ICSE syllabus covers fractions in depth — from basic concepts to operations involving mixed numbers and unlike fractions.

The challenge is not just computation. It is understanding what fractions mean. 34\frac{3}{4} is not just "three over four" — it is three parts out of four equal parts. Once you truly understand this, operations become logical.

This worksheet builds understanding first and fluency second, with 60 questions progressing from visual fraction models to multi-step word problems.

What Does This Worksheet Cover?

Aligned with the ICSE Class 6 Fractions chapter:

- Types of fractions — proper, improper, mixed, like, unlike
- Equivalent fractions — finding and simplifying
- Comparing and ordering fractions — using LCM
- Converting — mixed to improper and back
- Adding and subtracting fractions — like and unlike denominators
- Adding and subtracting mixed numbers
- Multiplying fractions — fraction by whole number, fraction by fraction
- Word problems — real-life fraction applications

Common Mistakes in ICSE Fraction Questions

Common Mistakes in ICSE Fraction Questions

1. Adding numerators and denominators directly. 13+1427\frac{1}{3} + \frac{1}{4} \neq \frac{2}{7}. You must find a common denominator first: 412+312=712\frac{4}{12} + \frac{3}{12} = \frac{7}{12}.

2. Forgetting to simplify. 68\frac{6}{8} should be written as 34\frac{3}{4}. ICSE examiners expect answers in lowest terms.

3. Errors with mixed numbers. To subtract 4131564\frac{1}{3} - 1\frac{5}{6}, convert both to improper fractions first: 133116=266116=156=212\frac{13}{3} - \frac{11}{6} = \frac{26}{6} - \frac{11}{6} = \frac{15}{6} = 2\frac{1}{2}.

4. Multiplying instead of finding a common denominator. For addition, you need common denominators. Multiplication has its own rule: multiply numerators together and denominators together.

5. Not converting mixed numbers before operating. Always convert mixed numbers to improper fractions before adding, subtracting, or multiplying. Convert back to mixed form at the end.
