Teach Multiplication to Class 3: Easy Guide
Multiplication does not have to be painful rote memorisation. Here is how to teach it step by step so your child actually understands it.
Why Multiplication Feels Overwhelming at First
Your Class 3 child has spent two years getting comfortable with addition and subtraction. Now suddenly they are expected to memorise tables from 2 to 10 and solve multiplication problems. It can feel like a mountain.
The reason multiplication feels hard is that most children are taught it as pure memorisation: "Just learn the tables." But memorising 100 plus facts without understanding what they mean is genuinely difficult for an 8 year old brain. It is like asking someone to memorise a phone book.
The good news is that multiplication is just repeated addition, and your child already knows addition. The key is to build from what they know (adding) to what they need to learn (multiplying), step by step. When taught this way, multiplication clicks much faster and sticks much longer.
The Step by Step Path from Addition to Tables
Follow this progression and your child will build genuine understanding alongside memorisation.
Step 1: Start with Groups and Repeated Addition
Before introducing the multiplication symbol, let your child see multiplication as groups. "3 groups of 4" means 4 plus 4 plus 4 equals 12. Use real objects: put 4 biscuits on each of 3 plates and count the total. Draw 3 circles with 4 dots each. This concrete, visual approach connects multiplication to something they already understand (addition) and makes the times symbol meaningful rather than arbitrary.
Step 2: Introduce Skip Counting
Skip counting is the bridge between repeated addition and tables. To learn the 3 times table, have your child count: 3, 6, 9, 12, 15, 18, 21, 24, 27, 30. Practise skip counting by 2s, 3s, 4s, and 5s regularly. Sing it, clap it, jump to it. When a child can skip count by 5s fluently, they effectively know the 5 times table. They just need to connect "5 times 4" to "the fourth number when I skip count by 5." A number line on the wall is extremely helpful here. Mark every 3rd number in red, every 5th in blue, and patterns start to emerge.
Step 3: Build Tables from Understanding
Now introduce the formal tables, but build them rather than just memorise them. Start with the easy ones: 1 times table (everything stays the same), 2 times table (just doubles, which they already know), 5 times table (skip counting by 5, all answers end in 0 or 5), and 10 times table (just add a zero). That covers 4 tables instantly. Next tackle 3s and 4s using skip counting. Then 6, 7, 8, and 9. By the time your child gets to the harder tables, they already know many of the facts from the easier tables because multiplication is commutative: 3 times 7 is the same as 7 times 3.
Step 4: Use the Commutative Property to Cut Work in Half
This is a game changer that many parents overlook. If your child knows that 3 times 8 is 24, they automatically know that 8 times 3 is 24. This means they do not need to memorise both facts. Out of the 100 facts in the tables from 1 to 10, the commutative property reduces the unique facts to about 55. And once you remove the easy tables (1s, 2s, 5s, 10s), there are only about 15 to 20 facts that genuinely need memorisation. Suddenly the mountain feels much more manageable.
Memory Tricks That Actually Work
Once your child understands what multiplication means, these tricks help with the memorisation part.
The 9 times table finger trick is legendary. Hold up all 10 fingers. To multiply 9 by any number from 1 to 10, fold down the finger at that position from the left. The fingers to the left of the folded finger are the tens digit, and the fingers to the right are the units digit. For 9 times 7, fold down the 7th finger: 6 fingers on the left, 3 on the right, answer is 63.
The 9 times table also has a digit sum pattern: 9, 18, 27, 36, 45, 54, 63, 72, 81, 90. The digits of every answer add up to 9, and the tens digit goes up by 1 while the units digit goes down by 1. Children love discovering this pattern.
For the 8 times table, the answers follow a units digit pattern: 8, 6, 4, 2, 0, 8, 6, 4, 2, 0. Noticing this pattern gives your child a way to check their answers.
Rhymes and chants work for stubborn facts. "Six times six is thirty six" has a natural rhythm. "Five six seven eight: 56 is 7 times 8" uses the counting sequence 5, 6, 7, 8 to remember that 7 times 8 equals 56.
For difficult facts like 7 times 8, try a story: "Seven ate (8) fifty six (56) cookies" (7 times 8 equals 56).

Fun Games to Practice Multiplication
Repetition is essential for memorising tables, but it does not have to be boring.
Times table war uses a deck of cards (remove face cards). Each player flips two cards and multiplies them. The higher product wins both sets of cards. This is fast, competitive, and addictive.
Multiplication bingo creates a grid with products (12, 24, 35, 48, etc.) and call out multiplication problems. If the answer is on their card, they mark it. First to get a row wins.
Skip counting races challenge your child to skip count by a given number as fast as they can while you time them. They will try to beat their own record every day.
The hundred chart exploration prints a hundred chart (1 to 100) and has your child colour in all multiples of 3 in red, multiples of 4 in blue, and so on. The patterns that emerge are beautiful and memorable.

Common Struggles and How to Handle Them
If your child confuses multiplication with addition (saying 3 times 4 equals 7 instead of 12), they need more work with the groups and repeated addition stage. Go back to physical objects and drawings before asking for abstract answers.
If they know the tables but cannot apply them in word problems, practise translating words into multiplication. "If each bag has 6 apples and there are 4 bags, how many apples in total?" Teach them to identify "how many groups" and "how many in each group."
If they are slow but accurate, that is perfectly fine. Speed comes with practice. Do not pressure them to answer instantly. Fluency develops naturally over weeks and months of regular practice.
If they resist practising tables because it is boring, switch to games and digital practice. A child who plays multiplication games for 15 minutes is learning more than a child who stares at a table chart for an hour.
