Common Mistakes in Data Handling
Common Mistakes in Data Handling
1. Miscounting tally marks. Every fifth mark crosses the previous four (). Double-check your counts against the original data.2. Ignoring the key in pictographs. If one symbol = 4 cars, then 3 symbols = 12 cars, not 3. Always multiply by the key value.
3. Wrong scale in bar graphs. If your data ranges from 10 to 90, a scale of 1 cm = 1 is impractical. Choose 1 cm = 10. The scale should make the graph readable.
4. Bars of unequal width. All bars in a bar graph must have the same width. Only the height varies.
5. Forgetting to label axes. Every bar graph needs a title, labelled axes, and a clearly stated scale. Marks are deducted in exams for missing labels.
