Algebra Is Not as Scary as It Sounds

When you first hear the word "algebra", you might picture complicated equations with lots of letters. But algebra in Class 6 is actually gentle. You are just learning to use a letter (like xx or nn) to stand for a number you do not know yet.

Think about it: "Riya has some chocolates. She gets 5 more." You can write the total as x+5x + 5. That is algebra. You have been doing this kind of thinking since primary school. Now you just learn to write it down using symbols.

This Algebra Class 6 worksheet introduces variables and expressions through 60 carefully designed questions.

What Does This Worksheet Cover?

Aligned with the NCERT Class 6 Algebra chapter:

  • Variables — using letters to represent unknown numbers
    - Constants and variables — telling them apart
    - Algebraic expressions — forming expressions from word statements
    - Like terms — basic identification
    - Substitution — finding the value of an expression for a given value of the variable
    - Forming equations — translating word problems into equations
    - Solving simple equations — by trial and error and by inspection

Sample Questions

Level 1 — Warm Up

1. Write an expression for: "7 added to a number nn."
2. If x=4x = 4, find the value of 3x+23x + 2.
3. Which of the following are expressions and which are equations? (a) 2x+52x + 5 (b) 2x+5=132x + 5 = 13 (c) y3y - 3

Level 2 — Build Confidence

4. A pencil costs Rs pp. Write an expression for the cost of 8 pencils and 3 erasers if each eraser costs Rs 5.
5. Form an equation: "A number increased by 9 gives 25."
6. If the perimeter of a square is 4s4s, find the perimeter when s=7.5s = 7.5 cm.

Level 3 — Push Yourself

7. Solve by trial: 3x5=163x - 5 = 16
8. Aarav's age is xx years. His father is 28 years older. The sum of their ages is 50. Write an equation and solve for xx.
9. The pattern rule for a sequence is 2n+32n + 3. Find the first 5 terms (for n=1,2,3,4,5n = 1, 2, 3, 4, 5).

Tips for Algebra Beginners

1. A variable is just a placeholder. The letter xx is not mysterious. It simply stands for a number you need to find. You can use any letter.

2. "Expression" vs "equation" — know the difference. An expression has no equals sign (3x+23x + 2). An equation has an equals sign (3x+2=143x + 2 = 14). You solve equations but evaluate expressions.

3. Translate word by word. "5 more than a number" = x+5x + 5. "Twice a number decreased by 3" = 2x32x - 3. Map each English phrase to a math operation.

4. Check your answer by substituting back. If you find x=7x = 7 for the equation 3x5=163x - 5 = 16, plug it in: 3(7)5=215=163(7) - 5 = 21 - 5 = 16. Correct!

5. Trial and error is perfectly valid at this stage. Try small whole numbers systematically. Start from 1 and work upwards until the equation balances.
