Decimals Are Fractions in Disguise

You see decimals every single day. The price tag says Rs 49.50. Your height is 1.42 metres. Your cricket batting average is 34.75. Decimals are just another way to write fractions whose denominators are 10, 100, 1000 and so on.

Once you see that 0.3=3100.3 = \frac{3}{10} and 0.25=25100=140.25 = \frac{25}{100} = \frac{1}{4}, decimals stop being scary. They follow the same place value logic as whole numbers, just extended to the right of the decimal point.

This Decimals Class 6 worksheet has 60 questions that take you from reading decimals all the way to adding and subtracting them confidently.

Tips for Working with Decimals

1. Always line up the decimal points. When adding or subtracting, write the numbers vertically with decimal points aligned. Add trailing zeros if needed: 12.6=12.60012.6 = 12.600.

2. Trailing zeros do not change value. 3.5=3.50=3.5003.5 = 3.50 = 3.500. But 3.053.05 is very different from 3.53.5. The zero between the decimal point and the 5 matters.

3. Convert to fractions to check. If you are unsure whether 0.250.25 is greater than 13\frac{1}{3}, convert: 0.25=140.25 = \frac{1}{4} and 13>14\frac{1}{3} > \frac{1}{4}. So 13>0.25\frac{1}{3} > 0.25.

4. Money problems are decimal problems. Rs 5.50 means 5 rupees and 50 paise. Every money word problem is a decimal operation.

5. Do not drop the decimal point. When subtracting 5023.7250 - 23.72, write 50 as 50.0050.00 first. Many students forget and get wrong answers.
