What is the difference between perimeter and area?

Perimeter is the total length of the boundary of a shape, measured in cm, m, etc. Area is the amount of surface enclosed by the shape, measured in square units (sq cm, sq m, etc.). Perimeter is one-dimensional; area is two-dimensional.

What is the formula for area of a triangle?

Area of a triangle = 1/2 x base x height. The base can be any side, and the height is the perpendicular distance from that base to the opposite vertex. For example, if base = 10 cm and height = 6 cm, area = 1/2 x 10 x 6 = 30 sq cm.

How do you find the area of an irregular shape?

Place the shape on a grid (squared paper). Count the number of full squares inside the shape. For partial squares: count more-than-half as 1, exactly half as 0.5, and less-than-half as 0. Add them up for the approximate area.

Perimeter and Area in Real Life

$Imagine you want to put a fence around your garden. You need the perimeter. Now imagine you want to tile the floor of your room. You need the area. These two measurements come up everywhere: painting a wall, buying carpet, wrapping a gift, framing a photograph.$

Tips for Mensuration Problems

$1. Draw the shape. Always sketch the figure and label the given measurements. This makes it much harder to use the wrong formula.$

$2. Check your units. If the question gives length in metres and breadth in centimetres, convert to the same unit first. Many students lose marks here.$

$3. Perimeter is "around", area is "inside". Perimeter measures the boundary (one-dimensional, in cm or m). Area measures the surface (two-dimensional, in sq cm or sq m). Never mix them up.$

$4. For irregular shapes, count full and half squares. On a grid, count full squares normally. Half squares count as 0.5. More-than-half squares count as 1, less-than-half as 0.$

$5. Wire-bending questions use equal perimeters. If a wire is reshaped, the perimeter stays the same. Set up the equation and solve.$
