Perimeter and Area in Real Life

Imagine you want to put a fence around your garden. You need the perimeter. Now imagine you want to tile the floor of your room. You need the area. These two measurements come up everywhere: painting a wall, buying carpet, wrapping a gift, framing a photograph.

Mensuration in Class 6 introduces the formulas for perimeter and area of basic shapes. The formulas are simple, but applying them to word problems takes practice. This Mensuration Class 6 worksheet gives you exactly that practice with 60 questions at three difficulty levels.

What Does This Worksheet Cover?

Aligned with NCERT Class 6 Mensuration chapter:

  • Perimeter — meaning and calculation for rectangles, squares, equilateral triangles, regular polygons
    - Area of a rectanglel×bl \times b
    - Area of a squares×ss \times s
    - Area of a triangle12×b×h\frac{1}{2} \times b \times h
    - Area of irregular shapes on grid paper (counting squares)
    - Conversion of units — cm to m, m to km, sq cm to sq m
    - Word problems — fencing, flooring, painting

Sample Questions

Level 1 — Warm Up

1. Find the perimeter of a rectangle with length 12 cm and breadth 7 cm.
2. Find the area of a square with side 9 cm.
3. A triangle has a base of 10 cm and a height of 6 cm. Find its area.

Level 2 — Build Confidence

4. A rectangular park is 150 m long and 80 m wide. Find the cost of fencing it at Rs 25 per metre.
5. Find the area of a shape made by joining a 4×34 \times 3 rectangle and a 4×44 \times 4 square side by side.
6. Convert: 2.5 sq m = ___ sq cm.

Level 3 — Push Yourself

7. A rectangular garden is 40 m by 30 m. A path 2 m wide runs along the inside of all four sides. Find the area of the path.
8. The perimeter of a rectangle is 56 cm. If its length is 18 cm, find the area.
9. A wire is bent into a square of side 12 cm. If the same wire is bent into a rectangle with length 15 cm, what will be the breadth?

Tips for Mensuration Problems

1. Draw the shape. Always sketch the figure and label the given measurements. This makes it much harder to use the wrong formula.

2. Check your units. If the question gives length in metres and breadth in centimetres, convert to the same unit first. Many students lose marks here.

3. Perimeter is "around", area is "inside". Perimeter measures the boundary (one-dimensional, in cm or m). Area measures the surface (two-dimensional, in sq cm or sq m). Never mix them up.

4. For irregular shapes, count full and half squares. On a grid, count full squares normally. Half squares count as 0.5. More-than-half squares count as 1, less-than-half as 0.

5. Wire-bending questions use equal perimeters. If a wire is reshaped, the perimeter stays the same. Set up the equation and solve.
