Tips for Mensuration Problems
Tips for Mensuration Problems
1. Draw the shape. Always sketch the figure and label the given measurements. This makes it much harder to use the wrong formula.2. Check your units. If the question gives length in metres and breadth in centimetres, convert to the same unit first. Many students lose marks here.
3. Perimeter is "around", area is "inside". Perimeter measures the boundary (one-dimensional, in cm or m). Area measures the surface (two-dimensional, in sq cm or sq m). Never mix them up.
4. For irregular shapes, count full and half squares. On a grid, count full squares normally. Half squares count as 0.5. More-than-half squares count as 1, less-than-half as 0.
5. Wire-bending questions use equal perimeters. If a wire is reshaped, the perimeter stays the same. Set up the equation and solve.
