Ratios Are Everywhere Around You

In a recipe, the ratio of sugar to flour might be 1:3. On a map, 1 cm might represent 5 km. In your classroom, the ratio of boys to girls tells you how the class is split.

Ratio and proportion is one of the most practical chapters in Class 6. You use it in cooking, shopping ("3 for the price of 2"), mixing paints, scaling drawings, and even calculating speed. The unitary method alone will help you in dozens of problems across Maths and Science.

This Ratio and Proportion Class 6 worksheet gives you 60 questions to build real fluency with these ideas.

What Does This Worksheet Cover?

Based on the NCERT Class 6 Ratio and Proportion chapter:

  • Ratio — meaning, notation (a:ba:b), order matters
    - Simplifying ratios — dividing by HCF to get simplest form
    - Equivalent ratios — multiplying or dividing both terms
    - Comparing ratios — converting to like fractions
    - Proportion — when two ratios are equal (a:b::c:da:b :: c:d)
    - Cross multiplication to check proportion
    - Unitary method — finding the value of one unit first
    - Word problems — cost, speed, recipe, map scale

Common Mistakes and Tips

1. Order matters in ratios. The ratio of boys to girls is not the same as the ratio of girls to boys. 3:55:33:5 \neq 5:3.

2. Ratios must have the same units. You cannot write a ratio of 2 kg to 500 g without converting first. Convert to grams: 2000:500=4:12000:500 = 4:1.

3. Simplify ratios like fractions. 18:24=3:418:24 = 3:4 (divide both by HCF = 6). Always present ratios in simplest form.

4. Cross multiply to check proportion. If ab=cd\frac{a}{b} = \frac{c}{d}, then a×d=b×ca \times d = b \times c. Quick and reliable.

5. Unitary method: always find the value of 1 first. If 6 pens cost Rs 90, one pen costs 90÷6=1590 \div 6 = 15. Then multiply by whatever quantity is asked.
