Perimeter and Area — Where Formulas Meet Real Life

Perimeter and Area is one of the most practical chapters in Class 6 maths. You're calculating the fencing around a garden, the tiles needed for a floor, or the paint required for a wall. These are real problems that adults deal with every day.

But here's the catch — students often mix up perimeter and area, or forget which formula goes with which shape. The only fix is practice. This worksheet has 60 questions that take you from basic formula application all the way to composite figure problems. Every answer includes step-by-step working.

What Does This Worksheet Include?

The worksheet covers the ICSE Class 6 syllabus for Perimeter & Area (Chapter 10):

Level 1 (Basics — 20 questions):
- Perimeter of squares and rectangles
- Area of squares and rectangles
- Finding side length when perimeter or area is given
- Converting units (cm to m, m to cm)

Level 2 (Application — 20 questions):
- Area of triangles (right-angled and general)
- Perimeter of irregular shapes by adding sides
- Word problems — fencing, flooring, painting
- Finding cost when rate per sq. m or per metre is given

Level 3 (Challenge — 20 questions):
- Composite figures (L-shapes, T-shapes, paths)
- Area of paths and borders around rectangles
- Problems involving both perimeter and area together
- Multi-step word problems with unit conversion

Sample Questions

Here's what you'll find inside:

Q1 (Level 1): Find the perimeter and area of a rectangle with length 1212 cm and breadth 88 cm.

Q2 (Level 1): The area of a square is 144144 sq. cm. Find the length of each side.

Q3 (Level 2): A rectangular garden is 2525 m long and 1818 m wide. Find the cost of fencing it at Rs 4545 per metre.

Q4 (Level 2): Find the area of a triangle with base 1414 cm and height 99 cm.

Q5 (Level 3): A rectangular room is 88 m by 66 m. A 11 m wide path runs around the outside of the room. Find the area of the path.

Q6 (Level 3): An L-shaped figure is made of two rectangles. The first is 1010 cm by 44 cm and the second is 66 cm by 33 cm. Find the total area and the perimeter of the L-shape.

Tips for Solving Perimeter and Area Problems

This chapter is formula-heavy, but the formulas are simple. The challenge is applying them correctly. Here's how:

Write the formula first, then substitute. Don't try to do it all in your head. For every question, write: "Area of rectangle = length x breadth", then put in the numbers. This prevents silly mistakes.

Always check units. If the length is in metres and breadth is in centimetres, convert first. ICSE papers love mixing units to test if you're paying attention.

Draw the figure. Even if the question doesn't give a diagram, draw one yourself. Label all the measurements. For composite figures, split them into simpler shapes — rectangles and triangles.

Know the difference between area and perimeter. Area is the space inside (measured in square units like sq. cm or sq. m). Perimeter is the boundary around the shape (measured in cm or m). Keep this distinction sharp.

For path/border problems: Area of path = Area of outer rectangle - Area of inner rectangle. This formula works every time.

Related Topics to Practise

Perimeter and Area connects closely to other geometry and measurement topics:

  • Basic Geometry — understanding shapes and angles helps you identify the right formula
    - Decimals — many area problems give measurements in decimals
    - Algebra Introduction — perimeter and area formulas use variables, great for connecting the two topics

In Class 7 and Class 8, you'll extend these ideas to circles, volumes, and surface areas. Getting the rectangle and triangle formulas down now builds a strong base for those more advanced topics.
