Fractions and Decimals — Two Ways to Express the Same Idea

Fractions and decimals are two different notations for the same concept: parts of a whole. The IB MYP framework emphasises understanding that 14\frac{1}{4}, 0.250.25, and 25%25\% all represent the same quantity.

Students who struggle with fractions often improve dramatically once they see the connection to decimals (and vice versa). This worksheet builds that bridge, starting with fraction basics and moving to operations and conversions.

The 60 questions progress from simple equivalent fractions to multi-step word problems involving both fractions and decimals.

What Does This Worksheet Cover?

- Multiplying fractions — fraction by whole number and fraction by fraction
- Fraction-decimal conversion — converting between the two forms
- Decimal operations — adding, subtracting, multiplying decimals
- Word problems — real-life applications of fractions and decimals

Tips for Fractions and Decimals

Tips for Fractions and Decimals

1. Always simplify your final answer. 68\frac{6}{8} should be written as 34\frac{3}{4}. Divide both numerator and denominator by their HCF.

2. To add fractions with different denominators, find the LCM. For 34+25\frac{3}{4} + \frac{2}{5}, the LCM of 4 and 5 is 20. Convert both fractions: 1520+820=2320=1320\frac{15}{20} + \frac{8}{20} = \frac{23}{20} = 1\frac{3}{20}.

3. To convert a fraction to a decimal, divide numerator by denominator. 38=3÷8=0.375\frac{3}{8} = 3 \div 8 = 0.375.

4. Line up decimal points when adding or subtracting decimals. Write the numbers vertically with the decimal points aligned. Fill empty places with zeros.

5. For word problems, identify the operation first. "How much is left" means subtract. "How much in total" means add. "Of" usually means multiply (e.g., 23\frac{2}{3} of 1515).
