Measurement and Units — Precision Matters

The IB MYP framework treats measurement as a practical, inquiry-driven topic. It is not just about converting between metres and centimetres — it is about choosing the right unit for the right situation, estimating sensibly, and understanding the limits of measurement.

A doctor needs milligrams, an architect needs metres, and an astronomer needs light-years. Knowing which unit fits and how to convert between units is a life skill that extends far beyond the classroom.

This worksheet covers the full metric system along with time and temperature, giving you 60 questions from basic conversions to multi-step real-world problems.

What Does This Worksheet Cover?

Aligned with the IB MYP Year 1 mathematics framework:

- Metric units of length — mm, cm, m, km and conversions
- Metric units of mass — mg, g, kg and conversions
- Metric units of capacity — mL, L and conversions
- Time — 12-hour and 24-hour clock, duration calculations
- Temperature — reading thermometers, Celsius scale
- Estimation — choosing appropriate units and reasonable estimates
- Compound measures — speed = distance / time (introduction)

| Level | Focus | Count |
|-------|-------|-------|
| Level 1 | Single conversions (cm to m, g to kg), read scales, basic time | 20 |
| Level 2 | Multi-step conversions, word problems, duration calculations | 20 |
| Level 3 | Compound measures, estimation reasoning, cross-unit problems | 20 |

Sample Questions

Level 1 — Warm Up

  1. Convert 3.53.5 km to metres.
  2. Which unit would you use to measure the mass of a watermelon — grams or kilograms?
  3. A movie starts at 14:30 and ends at 16:15. How long is the movie?

Level 2 — Build Confidence

  1. Convert 27502750 mL to litres and millilitres.
  2. A parcel weighs 1.21.2 kg. Postage costs Rs 1515 per 100100 g. How much is the postage?
  3. A train departs at 09:45 and travels for 22 hours 3535 minutes. What time does it arrive?

Level 3 — Push Yourself

  1. A car travels 150150 km in 22 hours 3030 minutes. What is its average speed in km/h?
  2. A recipe uses 250250 mL of milk per serving. You have 22 litres. How many full servings can you make?
  3. Estimate the height of your school building in metres. Explain your reasoning. (A typical classroom door is about 2.12.1 m tall.)

Tips for Measurement Problems

Tips for Measurement Problems

1. Know the conversion staircase. km to m: ×1000\times 1000. m to cm: ×100\times 100. cm to mm: ×10\times 10. Going the other way, divide by the same number.

**2. For mass: kg to g is ×1000\times 1000, g to mg is ×1000\times 1000.** The same ×1000\times 1000 pattern applies for capacity: L to mL is ×1000\times 1000.

3. For time calculations, be careful with 60. There are 60 minutes in an hour, not 100. If you get 75 minutes, convert to 1 hour 15 minutes.

4. Always check your answer is reasonable. If a door is 210210 m tall, you have made a conversion error — it should be 210210 cm or 2.12.1 m.

5. In the IB MYP, estimation is a valid mathematical skill. Being able to estimate that a classroom is about 88 m long, a textbook weighs about 500500 g, or a bucket holds about 1010 L shows real understanding.
