What is the distributive property?

The distributive property says that a x (b + c) = a x b + a x c. For example, 5 x 23 = 5 x 20 + 5 x 3 = 100 + 15 = 115. This property is extremely useful for mental maths and simplifying calculations.

How do you check a division answer?

Multiply the quotient by the divisor and add any remainder. The result should equal the dividend. For example, if 157 / 6 = 26 remainder 1, check: 26 x 6 + 1 = 156 + 1 = 157. This confirms the answer is correct.

Why is estimation important in the IB MYP?
