Your First Step into Algebra Starts Here

Algebra is that chapter where letters suddenly show up in maths problems. Instead of just numbers, you see xx, yy, nn — and it can feel strange at first. But here's the thing: algebra is actually just a shortcut for writing maths sentences. Once you see it that way, it stops being scary.

This worksheet has 60 questions designed for ICSE Class 6 students who are just starting with algebra. It begins with understanding what variables and constants are, and builds up to writing expressions and substituting values. Every question comes with a clear, worked-out answer.

What Topics Does This Worksheet Cover?

The worksheet covers Algebra Introduction (Chapter 7) from the ICSE Class 6 syllabus:

Level 1 (Basics — 20 questions):
- Understanding variables and constants
- Writing algebraic expressions from word statements
- Identifying terms, coefficients, and like terms
- Translating phrases like "5 more than a number" into expressions

Level 2 (Application — 20 questions):
- Substitution — finding the value of expressions for given values of variables
- Simplifying expressions by combining like terms
- Writing expressions for perimeter and area using variables
- Forming algebraic expressions from real-life situations

Level 3 (Challenge — 20 questions):
- Forming simple equations from word problems
- Solving by trial and error (systematic substitution)
- Pattern-based algebra problems (matchstick patterns, number sequences)
- Multi-variable expressions and substitution

Sample Questions from the Worksheet

Here are some examples so you can see the style:

Q1 (Level 1): Write an algebraic expression for: "7 less than three times a number nn"

Q2 (Level 1): Identify the coefficient and constant in the expression 4x+94x + 9.

Q3 (Level 2): If a=3a = 3 and b=2b = -2, find the value of 5a3b+75a - 3b + 7.

Q4 (Level 2): The length of a rectangle is (2x+3)(2x + 3) cm and its width is xx cm. Write an expression for its perimeter.

Q5 (Level 3): Raj is xx years old. His father is 25 years older than Raj. Their combined age is 55 years. Write an equation for this situation.

Q6 (Level 3): Look at the pattern: 3, 7, 11, 15, ... Write an expression for the nnth term of this pattern.

How to Build Algebra Skills Step by Step

Algebra is a thinking skill, not a memorising skill. Here's how to develop it:

Start by translating. Before solving anything, practise converting English sentences to algebraic expressions. "Twice a number minus 4" becomes 2n42n - 4. Do at least 10-15 of these until it feels natural.

Substitution is your friend. When the question says "find the value of 3x+23x + 2 when x=5x = 5", just replace xx with 55 and calculate: 3(5)+2=173(5) + 2 = 17. Write every replacement step clearly.

**Don't confuse 2x2x with x+2x + 2.** This is the most common mistake in Class 6 algebra. 2x2x means "xx multiplied by 2", while x+2x + 2 means "xx added to 2". They give very different answers.

Use the answer key to learn, not just to check. When your answer is wrong, compare your steps with the solution. Find the exact line where you went wrong. That's where the real learning happens.

Connect it to shapes. If a square has side ss, its perimeter is 4s4s. These geometric algebra questions are very common in ICSE papers.

Where Algebra Takes You Next

Algebra Introduction is just the beginning. Here's how it connects to your other Class 6 topics and beyond:

  • Simple Equations — you'll solve equations using balancing and transposition, building directly on what you learn here
    - Area & Perimeter — formulas use variables, so algebra skills make these problems easier
    - Integers — substituting negative values into expressions needs strong integer skills

In Class 7, you'll work with algebraic expressions in much more depth — adding, subtracting, and multiplying them. Getting comfortable with variables now means Class 7 algebra won't feel like a jump.
