Struggling with Negative Numbers? You're Not Alone

Integers are the first time most Class 6 students meet negative numbers, and honestly, it can feel confusing. What does 5-5 even mean? How can you subtract a bigger number from a smaller one? Why does 3+(4)=7-3 + (-4) = -7 but 3(4)=1-3 - (-4) = 1?

If any of that sounds familiar, this worksheet is exactly what you need. We've put together 60 questions that take you from the basics of understanding integers all the way to solving tricky problems with mixed operations. Every question has a detailed answer, so you're never left guessing.

What Does This Integers Worksheet Cover?

The worksheet follows the ICSE Class 6 syllabus for Integers (Chapter 3). Here's the breakdown:

Level 1 (Basics — 20 questions):
- Understanding positive and negative numbers
- Representing integers on a number line
- Comparing and ordering integers
- Finding absolute value of integers

Level 2 (Application — 20 questions):
- Addition of integers (same sign and different signs)
- Subtraction of integers
- Properties of integer addition (commutative, associative)
- Integer word problems (temperature, altitude, money)

Level 3 (Challenge — 20 questions):
- Mixed addition and subtraction with multiple integers
- Successor and predecessor of negative numbers
- Pattern recognition with integers
- Multi-step word problems involving integers

Sample Questions from the Worksheet

Take a look at what's inside:

Q1 (Level 1): Arrange the following integers in ascending order: 12,5,3,0,8,7,2-12, 5, -3, 0, 8, -7, 2

Q2 (Level 1): Mark these integers on a number line: 4,1,3,6,6-4, -1, 3, 6, -6

Q3 (Level 2): Find the value of (15)+(+8)+(3)+(+10)(-15) + (+8) + (-3) + (+10)

Q4 (Level 2): The temperature in Shimla was 3°C3°C in the morning. By night it dropped by 9°C9°C. What was the night temperature?

Q5 (Level 3): A submarine is at 250-250 metres below sea level. It rises 8080 metres, then dives 120120 metres. What is its final position?

Q6 (Level 3): Find the value of (8)(12)+(5)(+3)+(+9)(-8) - (-12) + (-5) - (+3) + (+9)

Tips to Master Integers Quickly

Integers trip students up because the rules for addition and subtraction feel backwards at first. Here's how to get comfortable faster:

Use a number line. Seriously. Draw one every time you solve a problem in the beginning. Moving left means subtracting, moving right means adding. It makes everything visual and clear.

Remember the sign rules:
- Same signs: add the numbers, keep the common sign
- Different signs: subtract the smaller from the larger, keep the sign of the larger number
- Subtracting a negative = adding a positive

Do Level 1 without a calculator. These questions build your confidence. If you can order integers and plot them on a number line without thinking twice, the harder questions become much easier.

Check your signs twice. Most mistakes in integer questions come from sign errors, not calculation errors. Before you write the final answer, double-check the sign.

What to Study After Integers

Once you're confident with integers, you've unlocked a big chunk of Class 6 maths. Integers connect directly to several other topics:

  • Fractions — you'll need to compare and order fractions, and the logic is similar to comparing integers
    - Algebra Introduction — variables can take negative values, so integer skills are a must
    - Number System — if you haven't done this yet, go back and strengthen your foundation

The more you practise integers now, the easier Class 7 maths will feel. Topics like rational numbers and algebraic expressions build directly on what you learn here.
