Struggling with Simple Equations? This Worksheet Will Fix That

Simple Equations is one of those chapters where students either get it instantly or feel completely lost. There is no middle ground. If you are in the second group, do not worry. You just need practice, and that is exactly what this worksheet gives you.

This Simple Equations worksheet is made specifically for ICSE Class 6 students. It covers everything from basic equation solving to tricky word problems. There are 60 questions split into three levels, and every single question has a detailed answer. Completely free, no catch.

What Does This Worksheet Cover?

The worksheet follows the ICSE Class 6 Simple Equations syllabus chapter by chapter.

Level 1 (Basics — 20 questions):
- Understanding what an equation is
- Identifying the variable in an equation
- Solving simple equations like x+5=12x + 5 = 12 and 3y=183y = 18
- Checking if a given value satisfies an equation

Level 2 (Application — 20 questions):
- Solving equations with variables on one side: 2x+3=112x + 3 = 11
- Using the transposition method (moving terms across the equals sign)
- Equations with subtraction and division: x4=7\frac{x}{4} = 7 and y9=15y - 9 = 15
- Forming equations from statements

Level 3 (Challenge — 20 questions):
- Word problems involving ages, money, and quantities
- Multi step equations: 3(x+2)=213(x + 2) = 21
- Equations where you need to simplify first
- Problems where you form the equation AND solve it

Sample Questions from the Worksheet

Here are some questions so you know what you are getting into:

Q1 (Level 1): Solve for xx: x+7=15x + 7 = 15

Q2 (Level 1): Check whether y=4y = 4 is a solution of 3y2=103y - 2 = 10

Q3 (Level 2): Solve: 2x+5=172x + 5 = 17

Q4 (Level 2): Form an equation: "A number increased by 8 gives 23." Write the equation and solve it.

Q5 (Level 2): Solve: m3+4=9\frac{m}{3} + 4 = 9

Q6 (Level 3): Riya is 5 years older than her brother. The sum of their ages is 27. Find their ages.

Q7 (Level 3): Solve: 4(p3)=2(p+1)4(p - 3) = 2(p + 1)

Q8 (Level 3): The perimeter of a rectangle is 46 cm. If the length is 5 cm more than the breadth, find the dimensions.

Common Mistakes Students Make in Simple Equations

After correcting thousands of Class 6 papers, here are the mistakes we see again and again:

Mistake 1: Forgetting to do the same thing on both sides. If you subtract 5 from the left side, you must subtract 5 from the right side too. An equation is like a balance scale. Keep it balanced.

Mistake 2: Sign errors when transposing. When you move +3+3 from the left side to the right side, it becomes 3-3. Many students forget to flip the sign.

Mistake 3: Not verifying the answer. Always plug your answer back into the original equation. If both sides are equal, you are correct. This takes 10 seconds and saves you marks.

Mistake 4: Jumping to the answer in word problems. Read the problem twice. Identify what the variable represents. Write the equation first. Then solve. Do not try to guess the answer directly.

Tip: Write every step neatly. In ICSE exams, you get marks for the method, not just the final answer.

What to Do After This Worksheet

Once you are comfortable solving equations, you have built a skill that will help you in every maths topic going forward. Equations show up in geometry (finding unknown angles), mensuration (finding dimensions), and data handling (finding missing values).

Here is what to try next:

  • Algebra Introduction — learn about variables, expressions, and how they connect to equations
    - Integers — practise with negative numbers, which you will need for harder equations
    - Ratio and Proportion — uses equation solving in every word problem

All topics have free worksheets and 60 practice questions each at sparkedmaths.com.
